Discovery – Step 1 in the design process

Posted by: admin  /  Comments: 1

There are many steps involved in the process of web design. To give our clients and potential clients a general idea of what to expect when they meet with a web designer, webgarden has laid out the general steps in a series of blog posts.

The first step of the web design  process is “Discovery”

Webgarden starts the first step of the web design process by meeting with our potential clients. We prefer to meet with our clients face to face, but if that is not possible, then we set up a telephone meeting. During the initial meeting we try to open the lines of communication by asking questions geared towards your business. What does your business do? What is your role in the company?

Next we ask what your goal is in creating or revising your website. What type of information would you like to have online? What type of usability would you like in your website? Who are your competitors? What are their website addresses? What do you like about your competition’s site? What would you change?

After going through all these questions in detail, we then have a better idea of the type of website you are looking for. Once we conclude the meeting, we begin the second step of the design process.

What is a blog?

Posted by: admin

I have heard time and time again, people asking what is a blog? So here is  the official webgarden answer:

A blog is like a web journal where you can write your thoughts and ideas – it can be a particular subject, or just daily life – there are no rules! A typical blog combines text and pictures, as well as links to other blogs. One of the popular benefits of having a blog is that your readers (or yourself) has the option of typing in their comments.

A blog can be for business or personal use.The idea of a blog, is to develop an online community or following of people who enjoy reading your thoughts and ideas. A typical blog is displayed in chronological order – where the most current date is at the top followed by previous entries.

There are multiple benefits to having a blog. The first and foremost being improved Google rankings. Why is this you may ask? Because each time you write in your blog, you are providing brand new content-and Google loves websites that are rich with content!

Number 1

Well, much to my surprise, when I Googled webgarden, we came up number 1! How did I do this you may ask? Well I did a “blog blitz” last week, by sending off several posts to the Think Referrals Business Networking website as well as commenting on other people’s posts. A friend of mine told me this was a great way to get some Google love and he was right! Yippee! Now I just have to keep it up!

Dreamweaver Bug

Posted by: admin  /  Comments: 2

For the last few days I have been fighting with my dreamweaver because every time I go to modify any php code, the application crashes! So the first few times, I thought it was me – Did I press the wrong button? I restarted the application after it automatically closed and tried again, but still, Dreamweaver keeps crashing. Then I thought, “oh it must be my computer acting up”. So I did I  HARD restart. “that’ll teach my computer a lesson for screwing around with me…” But no change. Dreamweaver crashed again as soon as I tried to make a change to some dynamic code.

After a bit of research on the Adobe site,  I found a techNote telling us that there is a file that has been corrupted by the time change and advising dreamweaver users to delete the file. The crashes do not occur in Dreamweaver 8 or earlier. So those of us using the shiny new CS3 will have to go in and delete the corrupted file.

Follow this link for the Adobe instructions on how to delete the corrupted file – and REMEMBER to change your folder settings to “view hidden folders” http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402776

My dreamweaver is back to normal again after deleted that corrupted file and I am breathing a sigh of relief!

Benefits of multiple domains

Posted by: admin

Is there a benefit to buying multiple domains? For instance, let’s say my company name is West Coast Growers and I grow all kinds of tropical plants. Is it beneficial for me to buy “westcoastgrower.com,  “orchid grower.com” , “bonsaigrower.com” ect… Does having multiple domains help Google rankings? Does it increase traffic to my site? Thanks in advance to all you techies for answering my question (and  hopefully) enlightening me!

What your website is about?

You should be able to look at the homepage of your website and know what it is about in 5 seconds. If you can’t, your website is a failure. Make sure your company name and tag-line are clear and make sense to the reader. Here is a good example of a really bad company name and tagline:

“Amp” This doesn’t tell me anything about the company, but it does imply  electricity. Their  tagline: “Experienced Passion” This makes me think about a dating service for seniors.

What is this site about? Who knows? Who is going to care to stay around and find out?
